Controguerra

Wine · PDO · 5 municipalities

Recognized since 2004 across five Abruzzo municipalities, including Ancarano, the Controguerra DOC distinguishes itself from neighbouring appellations through its highly specific vinification pathways. While the base red requires a minimum of 70% Montepulciano nero with yields capped at 12.0 tonnes per hectare, the appellation's defining feature is its sweet passito. To achieve this style, grapes undergo appassimento to a minimum of 24% sugar. Uniquely, these passitos earn the rare 'Annoso' designation only after aging for 30 months in small caratelli casks under 500 liters, offering a regulated complexity not found in standard regional sweet wines.
