Freisa d'Asti
Wine · PDO · 117 municipalities
Recognized as a protected denomination since 1973, Freisa d'Asti is crafted from at least 90% Freisa grapes grown across 117 hilly municipalities in the Asti province, including Agliano Terme. Uniquely, the technical rules specifically exclude the neighbouring areas of Cellarengo d'Asti and Villanova d'Asti from this production zone. To maintain the wine's characteristic red ruby hue and slightly tannic profile, vineyards must adhere to a strict maximum yield of 8.0 tonnes per hectare. Distinguishing itself from many Piedmontese siblings, the denomination's regulations explicitly ban producers from using the qualifier 'Riserva' on their labels, alongside terms like 'scelto' or 'selezionato'.
