Friuli
Wine · PDO · 156 municipalities
Recognised since 2016, the Friuli DOC encompasses 156 municipalities, including Aiello del Friuli, and currently counts 91 verified producers. What distinguishes this denomination from its regional neighbours is an international reach: while grapes must grow in Italy, the rules uniquely permit sparkling wine elaboration, or spumantizzazione, across the border in the Slovenian commune of Dobrovo. Furthermore, the designation enforces a strictly unembellished identity; unlike neighbouring DOCs, it completely bans the 'riserva' category alongside terms like 'superiore' and 'selezionato,' focusing instead on dry, harmonious wines with yields capped at 14.0 tonnes per hectare for its Bianco.
