Girò di Cagliari
Wine · PDO · 182 municipalities
Spanning 182 municipalities in Sardinia, starting alphabetically with Abbasanta, the Girò di Cagliari PDO has been recognized since 1973 for its dedication to the rare Girò grape, which must comprise at least 95% of the wine. What sets this denomination apart from neighboring reds is its versatility, enabled by a permitted light on-vine or on-mat grape withering. This technique yields delicate, ruby-red wines ranging from dry to sweet, as well as a fortified liquoroso style reaching at least 17.50% volume. For the liquoroso riserva, the appellation’s 35 verified producers must age the wine for two years, including at least 12 months in oak or chestnut barrels.
