Rosso di Montepulciano
Wine · PDO · 1 municipality
Recognised since 1996, the Rosso di Montepulciano DOC is distinct from Montepulciano d'Abruzzo; it is produced in the Tuscan comune of Montepulciano using at least 70% Prugnolo Gentile, a local Sangiovese clone. A unique link connects this denomination to its sibling, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano DOCG: wine originally intended for the DOCG may be downgraded and reclassified as Rosso di Montepulciano DOC within 16 months of the harvest. Yields are capped at 10.0 tonnes per hectare, resulting in a dry, slightly tannic ruby red wine. Lacking a formal aging period, it cannot be released before March 1st of the year following the harvest.
