As Italy’s only entirely landlocked region lacking both a coastline and an international border, Umbria concentrates its agricultural identity inward. In the southwestern hills, the municipalities of Guardea and Alviano each contain 12 overlapping protected denominations within their borders. The region's wine production is anchored by Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG, which relies on 65 verified producers clustered across a tight zone of 5 municipalities. Further north, the lake-influenced Colli del Trasimeno DOC brings together 16 producers, while the dry-cured Prosciutto di Norcia IGP is secured by 10 producers within its own mountain zone of 5 municipalities.
